The Sounds of "Nuclear Warfare"

2010: The Odyssey Continues

I went to a Board Meeting and they asked me if I would coach football. I said, ‘Sure, why not.’ I was coaching everything else at the school. They gave me 24 uniforms and we practiced on a pasture behind the school. Of course, those kids had never played football before. The first thing you had to do was show them how to put their uniform on. After that, it was all downhill.

Bob Malesky, Judson’s first football coach, in December, 1988 interview with San Antonio Express-News

1962 Notes:

Only five (5) days after the Judson Rockets play their first football game, JFK delivers his famous "moon speech" at Rice University's football stadium, in an articulation of literal "rocket" pride (click HERE to view clip). Brackenridge (re-named Wheatley in 1974, then Brackenridge once more in 1988) becomes first "integrated" team to win state title. Bob Malesky is brother of Gary Malesky, future JISD resident, and future successor to Frank Arnold at Holmes. Randolph also in first year. RAFB planning to have Rocket as their mascot, instead decides on "Ro-Hawk" (hyphenated hybrid between Rocket and Hawk).

1963 Notes:

Brackenridge silenced (55-48) by R.E. Lee on live local TV a few days after O.H. Lee (aka Alex Hidel and/or L.H. Oswald) is "silenced" by J. Rubinstein on live national TV. This, following Dallas' own version of "Nightmare on Elm Street," the day after one of the victims promises a future visit to the second HS in Bexar County to choose the Rocket as its mascot.
